    4. Weave in Ends and Block

This final step gives your project a polished finish.

Thread every yarn tail onto a yarn needle.

Weave each tail through at least 3 inches of stitches.

    Trim excess yarn.

    Lightly dampen the mug rug.

    Pin to 7 × 7 inches [18 × 18 cm] on a blocking mat.

Allow to dry completely before removing the pins.

Blocking helps your stitches relax and makes the heart design appear even sharper. If you enjoy projects like this, you’ll love exploring pixel grid crochet patterns and even creating your own grid crochet patterns free designs in the future.

Pro Tip: Cotton yarn responds beautifully to blocking and helps your finished mug rug lie perfectly flat.

    Final Thoughts

Congratulations—you’ve finished your very own heart mug rug! I hope this little project shows just how fun and approachable grid crochet patterns can be, even if you’ve never tried colorwork before. Watching a simple collection of squares turn into a recognizable picture is one of my favorite parts of crocheting. I’d absolutely love to see your finished mug rug, so be sure to share a photo and tag the blog if you make one. Happy crocheting, and I’ll see you again with another free pattern soon!

    FAQ

    What are grid crochet patterns?

Grid crochet patterns use squares on a chart to represent stitches, making it easy to crochet pictures, letters, and geometric designs using simple color changes.

How do I change colors neatly in graph crochet patterns?

Change to the new yarn during the final yarn-over of the previous stitch, then carry or weave in the unused yarn as you continue crocheting.

Why is my crochet grid design uneven?

Uneven tension is the most common cause. Counting stitches carefully, maintaining consistent tension, and blocking your finished piece will greatly improve the appearance of your design.
