    Chunky Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

This chunky baby blanket crochet pattern is one of my favorite projects when I want to make something soft, cozy, and wonderfully quick with chunky yarn. I love how the thick stitches create a beautiful, squishy texture without requiring complicated techniques. According to The Spruce Crafts,This blanket measures approximately 36 x 42 inches, making it a lovely size for cuddling, stroller use, or keeping in a nursery. If you’re looking for a chunky baby blanket crochet pattern for beginners, this one is especially approachable. Grab your supplies, get comfortable, and let’s make a beautiful handmade baby blanket together!

    Materials Needed

Super bulky weight #6 yarn: approximately 900–1,000 yards (820–915 m) total

Yarn color: approximately 6–7 skeins of a soft baby-friendly color such as cream, oatmeal, dusty blue, sage, or blush

10 mm crochet hook (US N/15)

Yarn needle with a large eye for weaving in ends

    Sharp scissors

    Measuring tape

Stitch marker, optional, for marking the first stitch of each round during the border

Choose a soft, washable yarn intended for baby blankets, and avoid loose embellishments such as buttons or beads.

    1. Create the Foundation Chain — chunky

This first part establishes the width of the blanket and gives us the foundation for the simple half-double-crochet fabric.

Make a slip knot and place it on your 10 mm crochet hook.

Chain 72 stitches. Keep your chains relaxed rather than pulling them tightly.

Count your chains carefully. You should have 72 ch.

For the first row, yarn over and insert your hook into the 2nd chain from the hook.

Yarn over again and pull up a loop. You should now have three loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through all three loops to complete your first hdc.

Continue making 1 hdc in each chain across the foundation.

At the end of the row, you should have 71 hdc.

    Turn your work.

Pro tip: If your foundation chain tends to become tighter than your crochet stitches, make each chain slightly looser than feels natural.

    2. Crochet the Main Blanket — chunky

This section builds the soft, chunky body of the blanket using simple half double crochet rows.

Row 1: Ch 1. This turning chain does not count as a stitch.

Make 1 hdc in each stitch across [71 hdc].

Rows 2–63: Ch 1, then make 1 hdc in each stitch across [71 hdc].

Continue working one row at a time until you have completed 63 rows total.

After Row 63, lay the blanket flat without stretching it.

Your finished blanket body should measure approximately 36 inches wide x 42 inches long.

If your measurements differ slightly because of yarn tension, that’s completely fine. The important thing is to keep your stitch count consistent at 71 hdc per row.

Do not fasten off yet if you want to work the border directly from the final corner.

Pro tip: Every few rows, gently smooth the blanket flat and check your edges. Consistent tension will help keep the sides straight.

    3. Add the Simple Crochet Border — chunky

The border gives the blanket a neat finished edge while adding a little extra structure around the chunky fabric.

After completing Row 63, ch 1.

Turn the blanket so you can begin working around the outside edge.

Make 1 sc in each stitch across the top edge [71 sc].

At the corner, make 3 sc in the corner space to turn neatly.

Work down the side of the blanket, making approximately 1 sc in the end of each hdc row [63 sc].

At the next corner, make 3 sc in the corner.

Work 1 sc in each foundation-chain stitch along the bottom edge [71 sc].

Make 3 sc in the next corner.

Work approximately 63 sc along the final side, placing one sc into the end of each row.

At the final corner, make 3 sc.

Join to the first sc with a sl st.

For a slightly more defined border, work a second round of sc around the entire blanket.

On the second round, make 1 sc in every stitch and 3 sc in each corner stitch.

Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Fasten off, leaving a 6–8 inch yarn tail.

Pro tip: Don’t pull your corner stitches tightly. Three sc in each corner helps the blanket lie flat instead of curling.

    4. Finish and Shape the Blanket

This final step tidies the yarn ends and gives your chunky yarn baby blanket crochet pattern its finished, ready-to-use appearance.

Thread the yarn tail onto your yarn needle.

Weave the tail securely back and forth through several stitches on the wrong side of the blanket.

Change direction and weave through the stitches again for extra security.

Trim the remaining yarn close to the fabric.

Repeat the same process for every loose yarn end.

Lay the finished blanket flat and gently smooth the edges.

If necessary, lightly reshape the blanket with your hands so the corners are square.

Check the entire blanket for loose ends before using it.

Follow the yarn manufacturer’s washing and drying instructions to care for your finished blanket.

Your finished blanket should be approximately 36 x 42 inches, although the exact dimensions can vary slightly depending on your yarn and personal tension.

    Final Thoughts

And that’s it—your cozy chunky baby blanket crochet pattern is finished! I love how quickly this project comes together while still looking beautifully handmade and special. The simple stitches make this an easy crochet baby blanket with chunky yarn, even if you’re fairly new to crochet. I hope you enjoy watching those rows grow as much as I did. If you make this blanket, I’d absolutely love to see your finished version! Share a photo and tag the blog so I can admire your beautiful work and celebrate your handmade creation with you.
